It gives me a great pleasure to witness the birth of the first issue of the Annals of Thoracic Medicine. The idea of providing a scientific journal, was in the hearts and minds of the founding members of the Saudi Thoracic Society, since the early days of the society. It took the board members, at least three years of planning and collection of thoughts, before this idea is turned into reality.

One of the great achievements of any society, is to have a peer - reviewed periodic, regular and up- to- date, scientific journal.

The main aim of the Annals of Thoracic Medicine (ATM), is to encourage research in the field of chest diseases and to help sharing results, scientific data and related medical information, between members of the society.

Furthermore, ATM is looking up to be of international interest, which is reflected by having a distinguished list of national and international members, in its editorial and advisory board.

I would like to thank Dr. Mohamed Al-Moamary, the chief editor of ATM and associate editors for their endless efforts and dedication, to produce such a high standard periodical with limited resource and experience.

The possibility of having an excellent online submission and review service, with outstanding setup of a website structure, is a witness for the quest for ultimate achievement and performance of the journal.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank the honorary president of the Saudi Thoracic Society, Prince Sultan Bin Mohamed Bin Saud Al- Kabeer, as without his continuous support and encouragement, the society and its activities would not reach this stage of progress in only few years, since it was established.
